How to add Forwarding Rules

A forwarding rule is a redirect from one page to another. 

One of the most common uses of the forwarding rule is to make your domain works with and without "www"

This Article will show the needed setup to add a Forwarding rule inside your Domain’s registrar.

Prior to getting started, you will need to have the following:

  • An external domain and access to the DNS area

General Setup

The required setup to add a Forwarding Rule into any domain’s registrar is using a Permanent 301 redirect.

Important Note: DNS servers can take up to 48 hours to update the information.

Most common Domain Registrars

Go Daddy

  1. From the Go Daddy DNS records area, scroll down to the Forwarding settings and click the paper and pencil icon.

  2. Under Forwarding, select https://

  3. Enter in the field to the right (replacing the part with your actual domain).
  4. Under Forward Type, select Permanent (301).
  5. Click Save.

GoDaddy help documentation:


  1. From Namecheap DNS records, click + Add New Record.

  2. From the dropdown, select URL Redirect Record.

  3. In Host Input, type the @ symbol
  4. Enter in the target value input. (In place of 'yourdomain using https:// and www before it.)
  5. Select Permanent (301)
  6. Click Save all Changes.

Google Domains

  1. Click Website from the left-hand menu from your Google Domains account.
  2. Click Set up Forwarding.

  3. Click on Edit.

  4. Click the trashcan icon next to the field that contains “www”

  5. In the Forward To area, enter in “your domain” with your domain name, no quotations)
    Do Not Select the blue Forward Button yet.
  6. Click on Advanced Options
  7. Select the following options:

    a.  Redirect Type: Permanent Redirect (301)
    b.  Path Forwarding: Forward Path
    c.  Forwarding Over SSL: SSL On
  8. Click on Forward.

Google Domains help documentation:


  1. From your Bluehost account, click on Domains, then Redirect.
  2. Select Permanent 301.

  3. Select your domain from the drop-down menu.
  4. If you want to redirect a single page or directory, you can use this text field.
  5. Enter the address that you are redirecting to. Example:
  6. Select Redirect with or without www.
  7. Click the "Wild Card Redirect" if you want to redirect to the same file on the new destination.
  8. Click on Add this Redirect.

Bluehost help documentation:


  1. From your Cloudflare Account, click Page Rules from the top menu.
  2. Click on Create Page Rule.
  3. Enter your domain using this format:*

  4. Select the Forwarding URL from the settings dropdown menu.

  5. Select 301 - Permanent Redirect from the Status Code dropdown menu.
  6. Enter the destination URL using this format:$1
  7. Click on Save and Deploy.
